GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Equipment - Types

Material Hoist are hoist that lift materials only.  No personnel are allowed to ride on the hoist platform. These hoist specifications and installations are governed by OSHA and ANSI standard 10.5

Personnel Hoist also commonly referred to as Man Lifts or Manlifts are hoist that lift personnel only.  No materials are allowed to be transported on the hoisting platform.  These hoist specifications and installations are governed by OSHA and ANSI standard 10.4

Personnel and Material Hoist also commonly referred to as Buck Hoist in the construction rental industry are hoist that lift both personnel and materials to the upper levels of a construction project.  These hoist are similar to elevators or lifts but are designed for heavy duty lifting.  The Personnel and Material Hoist specifications and installations are governed by OSHA and ANSI standard 10.4

What type of Personnel and Material Hoist does American Construction Hoist offer for rental or sale? 
American Construction Hoist has both high speed and regular speed hoist for rental or sale.  These hoists are variable speed hoist that can travel up to 340 fpm.

Why should I get a variable speed type of Personnel and Material Hoist VS a direct drive hoist? 
Hoist with variable speed motors and drives are smoother operating and require less maintenance than direct drive lifts.  American Construction Hoist’s equipment are variable speed hoist, capable of lifting 6,450 lbs up to 550 feet at a smooth speed up to 340 fpm.

What other type of Personnel and Material Hoist products does American Construction Hoist offer for rental or sale?
American Construction Hoist has many ancillary products for the hoist such as Safety Landing Gates, Enclosures, Embeds, Power Transformers and additional related items.  This equipment is available for rental or sale.

Do you install screens with the gates?
Yes we can.  A company representative will be happy to meet with you and discuss you special needs.

SPEED QUESTIONS  

How fast will a Buckhoist go?
American Construction Hoist’s equipment are variable speed hoist, capable of lifting 6,450 lbs up to 550 feet at a smooth speed up to 340 fpm.  Compare this to a man lift or material hoists which typically are direct drive with top speeds of only half this rate.

EQUIPMENT HANDLING QUESTIONS

How much time does it take to erect a construction hoist?
Erection can be done in a short time period typical a 2 or 3 day time period, if the pad and electric is in place and crane time as been scheduled.

We are considering just buying a Personnel and Material hoist, is there any way you could give me a ballpark price to buy a Buck Hoist like this with you installing/dismantling it on this job while our worker's learn from your installers?
American Construction Hoist personnel have erected and trained many customers’ personnel to erect and dismantle their company owned hoist.  American Construction Hoist also provides maintenance and inspection services to Buckhoist owners.

 ENGINEERING AND INSPECTION QUESTIONS

What Engineering/Drawings are needed to erect a Personnel and Material Hoist?
Generally very few drawings are need for a Buck Hoist erection.  Two potential drawings are the concrete pad and the attachments to the building.  American Construction Hoist personnel and engineers can provide these specifications and drawings.  Specifications for the concrete pad for the hoist are available here. 

What Licenses, Permits, Inspections are needed to erect and operate a Personnel and Material Hoist / Buckhoist on a construction site?
There is not a uniform license/permit for Personnel and Material Hoist.  Each governmental entity; be it, state, county, parish, etc… has different regulations.  American Construction Hoist personnel can provide these based upon the job sites address.  See the Request a Quote or send us an e-mail with the job sites address.

SAFETY QUESTIONS

What inspections are needed to certify a hoist safe for operation?
American Construction Hoist personnel will perform a complete final inspection and operational testing of the hoist prior to turning over the hoist to the customer.  These tests include a drop test and additional test of the electrical and braking systems.

Are these hoists subject to elevator regulations and inspections?
Personnel and Material Hoist are subject to separate regulations and inspections. Often the state elevator inspector is also the same person who will issue the permit for the hoist.  American Construction Hoist personnel can handle or assist the customer with this process.

What is a Drop Test?
A drop test is a standard test performed by American Construction Hoist personnel after the Personnel and Material Hoist / Buck Hoist has been erected.  This test is part of the final inspection and certification of the hoist.  The hoist car is load with its specified payload, raised up the mast a specified height and then is released.  The emergency braking system then engages and stops the car. 

 ERECTION SITE/CONCRETE PAD QUESTIONS

What type of foundation base pad do you recommend?
We recommend a concrete base pad.  A Concrete pad is required or an engineered design of other means of support.

What size concrete base pad is recommended?
A concrete base pad should have a minimum thickness of 12”.  The size of the pad is dependent on the size and number of hoist.  You can have a single or a dual car setup.

ELECTRICAL QUESTIONS

What power requirements are needed to safely operate the personnel and material construction hoist?
